earthquakeX for iPhone, formerly earthquakePR.

Choosing your region
Tap the region name at the top of Home to choose the country, state or region you want to follow. Home, the map, Activity and your alerts all follow that region. Switch to World View on the map anytime to see earthquakes around the globe.
Alerts
Turn on Earthquake Alerts in the Alerts tab, and choose the smallest magnitude you want to hear about. You can be alerted for your region, and also for major earthquakes anywhere in the world.
Alerts usually arrive a few minutes after an earthquake, once the USGS or EMSC has reported it. Stronger earthquakes (M4.5 and up) arrive as Time Sensitive, so they can come through a Focus.
Not getting alerts
- Check that Earthquake Alerts is on in the Alerts tab, and that your minimum magnitude isn’t higher than the earthquakes you expect.
- Open the Settings app, tap Notifications, then earthquakeX, and make sure Allow Notifications is on.
- Small earthquakes are common in some regions and rare in others. If your region is quiet, try a lower minimum magnitude.
Tsunami warnings
earthquakeX shows the official messages of the U.S. Tsunami Warning Centers for your region, on Home, in the widgets and as alerts. Always follow the instructions of your local officials and emergency services.
Aftershock Live Activity
After an earthquake of M5 or stronger in your region, a Live Activity on your Lock Screen counts the aftershocks for the next 8 hours. Turn it on or off in the Alerts tab. If it doesn’t appear, open the Settings app, tap earthquakeX, and make sure Live Activities is on.
I’m Safe and I Need Help
After a strong earthquake near you, Home offers two buttons for 12 hours:
- I’m Safe writes a message to your I’m Safe Contacts to tell them you’re OK.
- I Need Help writes a message with your exact location.
Add your contacts in Settings › I’m Safe Contacts. Messages are sent from the Messages app, and only when you tap Send.
Shaking maps and aftershock forecasts
For many earthquakes, the details page shows how hard the ground shook and the chance of aftershocks. Both come from the USGS, which makes them for stronger earthquakes, mostly in the United States and for large earthquakes worldwide. If an earthquake doesn’t have them, they don’t appear.
Distance from you
To see how far each earthquake is from you, allow location access when asked, or in the Settings app under earthquakeX › Location.
Seismic reports
In the Activity tab, tap the report button to get a written summary of the earthquakes you’re viewing. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, the report is written in natural language on your iPhone. Other iPhones get the same numbers with simpler wording.
Widgets
Touch and hold your Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose earthquakeX. Widgets show the latest earthquake in your region and any tsunami alert.
Language
earthquakeX is available in English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Indonesian and Turkish. It follows your iPhone’s language, or choose one in Settings › Language.
Coming from earthquakePR
earthquakePR is now earthquakeX. The “PR” was for Puerto Rico; the “X” is for wherever you are. Created for Puerto Rico, now for the world. The app was rebuilt from the ground up, and some older features, such as tsunami zones, sirens and assembly points, are no longer part of it. Puerto Rico is still one tap away: choose it as your region.
Important
earthquakeX shows earthquakes that have already happened, using data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). It can’t predict earthquakes or give early warning. Always follow your local officials.
Privacy
earthquakeX has no account, no ads and no tracking. Read the full Privacy Policy.
