Privacy Policy

earthquakeX for iPhone, formerly earthquakePR. Effective October 17, 2026.

The short version

Earthquake data

earthquakeX downloads earthquake information from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), and tsunami messages from our alerts server. These are requests for public data. They don’t include your location or anything about you, other than your device’s IP address, as with any internet connection.

Location

If you allow it, earthquakeX uses your location while you’re using the app to show you on the map, to show how far earthquakes are from you, to suggest your region, and to know whether a strong earthquake was near you. This happens on your iPhone. Your location is never sent to us or to the alert service.

To suggest a region, and when you search for a place, earthquakeX uses Apple’s map services to look up place names, the same way the Maps app does. Apple’s privacy policy applies to those lookups.

earthquakeX never uses your location in the background. You can change location access anytime in the Settings app, under earthquakeX.

Alerts

Alerts are sent with OneSignal, a notification service. When you turn on alerts:

Neither receives your name, email, location or contacts. This information is used only to send you the alerts you asked for. When you turn off alerts, your settings are removed from our server.

I’m Safe and I Need Help

The contacts you add to I’m Safe Contacts are chosen with Apple’s contact picker, which only gives earthquakeX the people you pick, not your whole address book. They’re stored on your iPhone.

I’m Safe and I Need Help write a message in the Messages app, addressed to those contacts. Nothing is sent until you tap Send. I Need Help includes your exact location in the message, and asks for permission to use it first. These messages go from your iPhone to your contacts. We never receive them.

Seismic reports

Reports in the Activity tab are written on your iPhone, with Apple Intelligence’s on-device model when it’s available. Nothing is sent to Apple’s servers or to us.

Photos

earthquakeX only asks to add to your photo library when you choose to save an earthquake image. It never reads your photos.

Sharing

When you share an earthquake, it goes only where you choose to send it. We don’t receive a copy.

What we don’t do

If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings, Apple may share anonymous crash reports with us. You can change this in Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Analytics & Improvements.

Deleting your data

Children

earthquakeX isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top.
